Alright, ya’ll, September is here and you know what that means! It’s fall! Some of you might think it’s too early to start celebrating what is undoubtedly the best season of the year. If that’s you, then why are we even friends? I’m sure you’re saying that it’s still so warm outside. As a native Floridian I have no issues with sitting in my fall-decorated home, sipping a pumpkin spice latte, and looking forward to the beach trip that we have planned for the weekend after Labor Day. Seasons have less to do with weather and more to do with mood. And I’m fully in a fall mood! Hopefully this month’s checklist will help you get into a fall mood, too.
The first thing y’all need to do this month is to decide on your fall priorities. I don’t know about ya’ll, but I have this temptation to go to every farmers market, pumpkin patch, trick or treat, and festival available. So sometime towards the beginning of this month sit down with your husband, and kids if they’re old enough, and nail down some fall priorities. Include how many weekends a month you need to have “off” to do nothing. Rest really is restorative, so make sure you find some time in this season to rest.
This is also a great time to decide what your Halloween plans are before the pressure of October hits. Decide and order costumes, narrow down the must-do events, and release yourself from the pressure of attending every trick or treating opportunity. Or, release yourself from Halloween all together. A sweet, wise, mama-friend of mine told me to choose one holiday and just don’t do it. Ours is St. Patricks’ day; hers is Halloween. Choosing your priorities outside of the pressure of the moment is a really freeing exercise. Right now, our fall priorities are: make a scarecrow, plant a fall garden, go trick or treating in my parents’ neighborhood, and have at least one bonfire a month. Sometimes our bonfires are big events where we invite lots of people over, sometimes it’s just us four. Either way, there will be smores! Which reminds me, I need to add marshmallows to my grocery list.
The more “house-y” things you need to do are: flip the beds, change toothbrushes, and decorate for fall if that’s your thing. But I don’t know anyone over 30 who thinks that isn’t their thing. Flipping beds is something I’m kinda passionate about. It’ll extend the life of your mattress: your back and hips will thank you, and your bank account will thank you. It’s difficult to explain the whole flipping process here, so if you don’t already follow me on Instagram @minimalish_by_heather go on over there and give me a follow. I have a highlight on my profile about how to flip your mattress, and I’ll nag you about that and changing your toothbrushes every three months. Plus bonus cute little toddler content!
Anyways, happy fall, y’all! I hope this season is everything you wish it to be! (But if you live in the south, don’t wish for it to be cold. You’ll just be disappointed because we going to sweat until December.)
