March Cleaning Checklist

Alright y’all. We’re rolling right on into March! Spring - finally! Ok, technically spring doesn’t start until the end of the month but whatever. My throw pillows are here to announce that spring has sprung in the McLeod household! I’m hoping for a full month of mild days, open windows, and playing outside before the summer mosquito swarms are in full strength. And with spring comes the March Cleaning Checklist.

Let’s start out with the big task: vacuuming under furniture! I recently bought a new Shark vacuum and am in love with it. It came with an under-furniture cleaning attachment that I plan to use the heck out of this month. If you don’t have a vacuum attachment specific to cleaning under furniture, using that long pointy one will work just fine. I really only use the attachment for furniture I can’t move, anyways. If it’s fairly easy to move the furniture, do it! Use this opportunity to give those baseboards a quick vacuum or wipe off. There’s probably not coffee or weird stuff that got dripped behind the couch, so no need to full on clean them, just a good dusting will suffice. And if there is goop on them, no judgment. Blame it on the kids. For really big things like the bed you might not be able to reach all the way into the middle under the bed. That’s ok! Our goal is better, not perfect. This could be a chance to embrace the “ish” in minimalish for you perfectionists.

March is the first time we’ve been together for the quarterly cleaning items: beds and toothbrushes. Rotating mattresses on your beds is imperative. It helps the mattress last as long as possible and stay as good & bouncy as possible. Mattresses are a huge investment! They’re expensive as all get out, and we spend ⅓ of our day in them (we hope). Here’s a few things to consider before you drag your husband into the bedroom for a decidedly less favorite bedroom activity: is your bed standard or memory foam? Is it double sided or single sided? Both need to be flipped, but the guidelines may be different. Take a quick look at your mattress. Does it have the “topping” on both the top and bottom? If so, sometimes you’ll need to rotate and flip. If it doesn’t, and the “topping” is only on the top, then every three months you’ll rotate it 180⁰. This is even important for memory foam. The weight and heat from sleeping bodies does wear the foam down, so you’ll still need to rotate it just like a standard mattress. If you have a standard mattress with the pillow top “topping” on the top and bottom, a flip is sufficient this month. For a more detailed how-to, check out the "Bed Rotation" highlight on my Instagram. And make sure you check back in another three months - sometimes we’ll rotate and flip.

Along with flipping the mattresses, please replace your toothbrushes. If you have seasonal decorations, now is also a great time to get them out. I decorate for Spring March-May, and add in Easter decorations in the month of April (or 2-3 weeks before Easter, depending on when it lands). If you’re an aspiring green thumb, now’s a great time to start thinking about gardening plans. Even just some herbs in a convenient location, like by whatever door you use most, is a great way to enjoy some plants, and bonus: add a little freshness to your cooking. Just be cautious about planting right now - we tend to have one last frost right before Easter.

Alright, folks! Download the pdf HERE, print it out, and have fun checking things off. xoxo
