Hey y’all! As promised in my last blog, I’m going to give y’all some ideas for some housework to do this month. I promise it’s not a long list, and there’s no majorly time consuming projects on it.
Buy Birthday Cards for the Year
Go through your phone’s calendar, your mama’s calendar, and Facebook to compile a list of all the birthdays for the year. (Full disclosure: that part might take some time. But once you’ve made the list, keep the list. Birthdays are the same every year.) Then head out to Walmart or wherever and go to town! The cashier will think you’re a little bonkers, but it’ll make your life easier in the long run.
Write Thank You Cards for Christmas Gifts
We could all practice being more grateful. I’ve also found that when I write thank you cards it helps me remember who gave me what so I can think of them throughout the year(s) when I use their gift. Our boys aren’t big enough for this yet, but I found some really cute fill in the blank kid’s cards on Amazon that I plan on purchasing in the future.
Wash Curtains
Ok, stick with me here. I know this one sounds super “extra”. Washing curtains doesn’t take much time or effort, promise. I timed myself this year and it only took about an hour of involvement spread over two days. I wash curtains twice a year because I LOVE keeping windows open in the spring and fall when the weather is nice. When windows are open, fresh air isn’t the only thing that comes inside, pollen does too. And sticks to your curtains. The cat and the kids love to live with their heads pressed up against the screen when windows are open, so the curtains get an extra layer of cat hair and grubby fingerprints, too. Curtains also collect dust at the top, and dust is the #1 offender of my indoor allergies.
When you’re taking the curtains down to wash, just pull the extension rod apart in the middle and slide the curtains off that way. Then, after they’re washed and dried, put them back up the same way. It saves time, it saves your arms from lifting heavy curtain rods. And it’ll save your allergies.
When I first started doing this, I had a little bit of anxiety. One of my sets of curtains said to line dry only! I started to regret starting this little project when I realized curtains hang up, you doof. Just hang them up and let them dry on the rod. Now I prefer to hang them up still a little damp and let gravity pull all the wrinkles out. Because y’all know I am NOT going to mess with ironing.
Wash Windows
As far as washing the windows goes, if you have kids who know to not lick the window or if you don’t open windows often you can probably get away with doing this just once a year. My oldest likes to /literally/ spit shine the windows, so things get a little funky over here. As a kid, one of my favorite chores was cleaning the windows. I got paid a quarter a window! Even now, the oldest enjoys going around the house with his washcloth “helping” me wash windows. Blast music, involve the kids, and make it a party!
That’s it y’all. Just four things. (Told you it wouldn’t be too long of a list.) Happy New Year, here’s to hoping 2022 is happy, healthy, and a little more tidy than last year.
