Hey y’all! I try to do one “chore” each day, to keep housework from piling up too much. And one 15-20 minute chore a day is all this mama can handle! Today’s chore was cleaning the bathrooms, and I thought y’all might enjoy hearing a few tips I’ve picked up. My first job was with Covenant Cleaning Services in Orlando. I was still in high school and it was the BEST first job to have. Even now, nearly two decades later (gag) it’s still one of my favorite jobs I’ve ever had. My bathroom cleaning “technique”, if that’s what you want to call it, is a combination of what I learned there, at Covenant Cleaning, and some tips I picked up from reading Speed Cleaning by Jeff Campbell and The Clean Team.
Let the product do the work for you. When you use a product, you probably shouldn’t wipe it off right away. Squeeze the cleaner in the toilet, then spray the sinks, THEN go back and scrub the toilet. Next, the sinks. The product gets time to work, and you're not standing around the bathroom waiting doing nothing. Work efficiently, don't work harder! And let those chemicals do the work they were designed to do!
Work from top to bottom. If you spray and wipe down your counters then do the mirror, you’ll probably end up with little misty drops of your glass cleaner on the counter. Those drops will either leave spots on your freshly cleaned counters or attract dust and grime as they take longer to dry. Sounds like un-doing your hard work! And I don’t like that. So, spray the mirror and wipe that down then move on to the counters.
Sit on the toilet. For real. Some of the best cleaning advice I’ve ever been told is to sit on the toilet and look around. That’s usually the vantage point we see the bathroom from anyways, isn’t it? Take a minute when you’re done cleaning the bathroom to sit on the toilet and look around. Notice anything out of line? Any lingering dusty spots, like the top of the toilet paper dispenser? If you’re feeling really thorough, go sit in the bathtub and take a look around.
Do mini-cleans throughout the week. Full disclosure: I only really “clean” the bathroom once a month. I do try to clean toilets weekly, but here’s something quick and easy you can do to stretch out the time between heavy-duty bathroom cleanings: wipe down the counters, especially water spots, daily. When I first read this advice I thought that it was crazy. On top of everything I try to remember to do around the house and for my family, wipe down counters daily? You’re nuts. But then it dawned on me. I wash my face daily, right? So go ahead and use that wash cloth to wipe up any offending spots of water, grime, or toothpaste. It fit right into my night time routine without taking up more than a minute of my time. It really did help me stretch bathroom cleanings from weekly to monthly, which is a total win.
Happy cleaning, y’all!
